Square wall art: the quiet luxury

There’s something about a square. It doesn’t lean towards portrait or landscape – it simply rests, balanced and calm, and a little unexpected on a wall. In 100x100 cm it becomes a statement with the restraint of a gallery piece. Here’s why the square feels so exclusive, which size to choose, and how to style it so it looks its best.

    In short

    • 4square sizes: 40x40, 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm
    • 1:1no portrait or landscape to choose – it simply fits
    • 100x100cm – our largest square, a statement on its own
    • 5cm between the prints when you hang four in a grid

Why the square feels so exclusive

Most art is a rectangle, which is exactly why a square stands out. Its equal sides give it a stillness that portrait and landscape formats don’t have – nothing pulls the eye up or sideways, and the motif just sits there, centred and confident. It’s the format of art books, gallery catalogues and record sleeves, and it carries some of that feeling with it.

In 100x100 cm the effect grows. One large square above a sideboard or bed has the presence of an original painting, without the busyness of a gallery wall.

    Where a square works

Above the bed. One 100x100 centred above a double bed is calmer than a pair and bolder than a single rectangle.

Above a sideboard. A square echoes the low, long lines of the furniture without competing with them. A 70x70 above a 100–120 cm sideboard is just right.

In a grid. Four 50x50 in two rows, 5 cm apart, read as one large square – graphic, ordered and very calm.

Mixed in. One square breaks up a row of portrait prints and makes the whole group look more curated. Four ideas, drawn to scale above the furniture they suit:

    The statement

One 100x100 centred above a 160 cm bed or sideboard. Calm, grand and impossible to miss.

    The grid

Four 50x50 with 5 cm between them, about 105 cm across – made for a 160–180 cm sofa.

    The pair

Two 70x70 side by side, about 145 cm wide, above a 200 cm sofa or a wide bed.

    The mix

A 70x70 between two 40x50 portraits – the square holds the centre of the group.

    Torn between two sizes?

Tape both squares on the wall and look at them from the sofa or the doorway. A square has no long side, so it can look smaller on the wall than the numbers suggest – if you’re in doubt, go for the larger one.

What sizes do square prints come in?

Our square prints come in 40x40, 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm.

What size square should I hang above a sofa?

Above a 200 cm sofa, one 100x100 or two 70x70 side by side. Above a smaller sofa, four 50x50 in a grid look great.

    Are the prints delivered framed?

No. In Australia our prints are delivered unframed, ready for a frame of your choice.
