Bedroom wall art: ideas above the bed and beyond

The bedroom wall is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing at night. It deserves art that feels calm and personal – and that fits the bed below it. Here’s how to size and hang art above the bed, what works by the bedside and on the other walls, and how to choose motifs that make the room feel restful.

    In short

    • 2/3of the bed’s width is a good size for the art above it
    • 15–25cm between the top of the headboard and the frame
    • 1calm focal point above the bed feels more restful than a busy wall
    • 30x40is a good size above a bedside table

    Above the bed

The wall above the bed is the natural focal point, so give it one clear idea. Aim for art about two thirds of the bed’s width – roughly 95 cm above a 140 cm bed, 105 cm above a 160 cm bed and 120 cm above a 180 cm bed – and hang it 15–25 cm above the headboard. Centre it on the bed, and let the bedside lamps and tables frame it on each side. Above a 160 cm bed, that gives you four good options:

    One landscape print

One landscape 70x100, about 100 cm wide. Calm, simple and easy to hang straight.

    One square print

One 100x100, as wide as the landscape print but taller. Calm, modern and a little unexpected.

    A pair

Two 50x70, about 106 cm wide – lovely with a matching lamp on each side of the bed.

    A small gallery wall

Five frames around one 40x50, about 112 cm wide. Personal, and it can grow over time.

Based on our hanging guide: 20–25 cm above the furniture, 6 cm between frames and the top edge no higher than 210 cm. Standard furniture heights and a 240 cm ceiling.

By the bedside and on the other walls

Above the bedside table. A small print in 30x40 or 21x30, hung a little lower than usual, is seen from the pillow rather than from across the room. Two similar prints, or two from the same series, one on each side of the bed, feel calm and balanced.

Above the dresser. A small chest of drawers by the bed needs no more than a 30x40. A wide dresser works like a sideboard: a landscape print about two thirds of its width, or one or two frames leaning on top.

The wall opposite the bed. It’s the first thing you see when you wake up – save a favourite for it.

    Choose motifs that feel restful

A bedroom doesn’t have to be beige, but it should feel calm. Soft colours, gentle shapes and plenty of space around the motif make a wall easy to live with, morning and night. Take two or three colours from your bedding and let them guide the art. Four directions that suit most bedrooms:

    Soft abstracts

Gentle shapes and muted colours that rest easily above linen and wood.

    Botanicals

Flowers and leaves bring a little nature into the room without taking over.

    Line art and figures

A few confident lines feel personal and light – lovely as a pair on each side of the bed.

    Sea, sky and stillness

Calm photography with a horizon or a soft light to rest your eyes on.

Or start with a ready-made wall

Our gallery walls are put together with sizes that fit each other, and you can shop them print by print. These two are made for the space above a bed:

Hang it safely above the bed

Use two hooks or nails for frames from 50x70 and up, so the frame stays level and can’t slide. Above a bed, choose a frame with shatter-free acrylic glazing rather than glass – lighter and safer.

What size art should hang above a bed?

About two thirds of the bed’s width: roughly 95 cm of art above a 140 cm bed, 105 cm above a 160 cm bed and 120 cm above a 180 cm bed. That’s one landscape 70x100, two 50x70 or three 30x40.

How high should art hang above the bed?

Leave 15–25 cm between the top of the headboard and the bottom of the frame. Without a headboard, measure the same distance from the top of the pillows.

Should art above the bed be centred?

Yes – centre it on the bed, not on the wall, so the bed and the art read as one. With bedside tables on both sides, a pair or a row keeps the wall balanced.

What kind of art is good for a bedroom?

Calm motifs in soft colours: abstracts, botanicals, line art and photography of sea and sky. Repeat a colour from your bedding to make the room feel finished.

Is it safe to hang art above a bed?

Yes, if you hang it securely. Use two hooks for larger frames and choose shatter-free glazing rather than glass.
