Heron Poster

Heron puts a single wading bird on a warm sand ground and builds it from a handful of loaded brushstrokes. The body is one broad sweep of grey, the folded wing a block of near black, and the long bill a single tapered line. Dry edges and flecks of bare ground show where the brush ran out, which gives the bird its weight without any outline. A few scattered marks sit below it where water would be, and the artist's signature is left visible in the lower corner. It is restrained work that still reads clearly from across a room.

Black or dark oak suits the ink, and a wide mat board gives the sand ground room to breathe. It fits a calm, pared-back room and sits well in a bedroom or a hallway where you pass it rather than stare at it. Pair it with natural linen, rattan and pale wood, and keep whatever hangs beside it equally quiet. It also works as part of a pair with other ink studies.
