Square wall art: the quiet luxury

There’s something about a square. It doesn’t lean towards portrait or landscape – it simply rests, balanced and calm, and a little unexpected on a wall. In 100x100 cm it becomes a statement with the restraint of a gallery piece. Here’s why the square feels so exclusive, which size to choose, and how to frame it so it looks its best.

    In short

    • 4square sizes: 40x40, 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm
    • 1:1no portrait or landscape to choose – it simply fits
    • 16frame colours, from oak and black to teal and plum
    • 14mat board colours for a true gallery look

Why the square feels so exclusive

Most art is a rectangle, which is exactly why a square stands out. Its equal sides give it a stillness that portrait and landscape formats don’t have – nothing pulls the eye up or sideways, and the motif just sits there, centred and confident. It’s the format of art books, gallery catalogues and record sleeves, and it carries some of that feeling with it.

In 100x100 cm the effect grows. One large square above a sideboard or bed has the presence of an original painting, without the busyness of a gallery wall.

    Where a square works

Above the bed. One 100x100 centred above a double bed is calmer than a pair and bolder than a single rectangle.

Above a sideboard. A square echoes the low, long lines of the furniture without competing with them. A 70x70 above a 100–120 cm sideboard is just right.

In a grid. Four 50x50 in two rows, 5 cm apart, read as one large square – graphic, ordered and very calm.

Mixed in. One square breaks up a row of portrait prints and makes the whole group look more curated. Four ideas, drawn to scale above the furniture they suit:

    The statement

One 100x100 centred above a 160 cm bed or sideboard. Calm, grand and impossible to miss.

    The grid

Four 50x50 with 5 cm between them, about 105 cm across – made for a 160–180 cm sofa.

    The pair

Two 70x70 side by side, about 145 cm wide, above a 200 cm sofa or a wide bed.

    The mix

A 70x70 between two 40x50 portraits – the square holds the centre of the group.

    Frame it like a gallery

Our square frames come in 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm and in 16 colours – classic oak, dark oak, black and white, and softer or bolder shades like teal, plum, mint and sky blue. Choose "Add frame" on the poster’s product page and you get both in the same order. In 100x100 the frame is sold together with the poster: we mount it and deliver it ready to hang.

For the full gallery look, add a mat board. A 40x40 poster fits a 50x50 frame with a mat, and a 50x50 poster fits a 70x70 frame – the wide border gives the motif room to breathe. Square mat boards come in 14 colours, from white and cream to red, teal and orange.

    Poster or canvas?

Square canvas comes in 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm, printed on finely textured canvas and delivered ready to hang. Add a floating frame in oak, dark oak, black or white, and the small shadow gap around the edge gives it the depth of a gallery piece. Painterly motifs like Out of Vase Blooms I and Porthmeor Sunset are beautiful on canvas, while graphic prints and photography come into their own as framed posters.

    Torn between two sizes?

Tape both squares on the wall and look at them from the sofa or the doorway. A square has no long side, so it can look smaller on the wall than the numbers suggest – if you’re in doubt, go for the larger one.

What sizes do square posters come in?

Our square posters come in 40x40, 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm. Square canvas comes in 50x50, 70x70 and 100x100 cm.

Which frame fits a square poster?

    A square poster fits a square frame in the same size: 50x50 in 50x50, 70x70 in 70x70 and 100x100 in 100x100. There’s no 40x40 frame – a 40x40 poster goes in a 50x50 frame with a mat board.

Can I buy a 100x100 frame on its own?

No, the 100x100 frame is only sold together with a poster in the same size. We mount the poster and deliver it ready to hang.

Is there a mat board for 100x100?

No. Square mat boards fit our 50x50 frames (with a 40x40 poster) and 70x70 frames (with a 50x50 poster).

What size square should I hang above a sofa?

Above a 200 cm sofa, one 100x100 or two 70x70 side by side. Above a smaller sofa, four 50x50 in a grid look great.

Does square canvas come ready to hang?

Yes. Our canvas prints arrive ready to hang, and you can add a floating frame in oak, dark oak, black or white.
