Retreat

2 posters · 2 × 19.7x27.6 in

Retreat is a pair of Postery's own abstract paintings, Retreat 01 and Retreat 02, made to hang side by side. Broad, soft brushstrokes in white, beige and pale gray layer over each other, giving the surface a texture close to plaster or linen. On the left, the strokes rise upwards; on the right, they drift more loosely across the sheet. In 19.7x27.6 in above a black desk, the pair gives a home office a quiet backdrop that never competes for attention. It works just as well above a bed or sofa, wherever you want texture more than color.

Styling tips

• Thin oak frames give the pale motifs a warm outline. White frames would let them blend into a light wall for an even softer look.
• Contrast the softness with one dark piece, like the black desk here, so the room keeps some depth.
• A wooden chair, a ribbed table lamp and stacks of books in sand and white repeat the textures without adding color.
• A greige wall with a matt finish lets the brushstrokes show. On bright white, the light gray tones can look washed out.

Hang the wall

With 2.5 in between the frames, the wall measures about 43 × 30 in. It suits a desk, sideboard or bed that is 55–63 in wide. Above a bed or sideboard, leave 6–10 in; above a desk, allow a little more so a lamp fits underneath, as in the picture. Hang both frames on the same center line and keep the gap even from top to bottom.
