Artist talk: Elin PK
Elin PK is a colourful source of inspiration through her art, brightening up even the gloomiest Swedish winter mornings. We know this to be a fact as we pass one of her beautiful murals currently covering the Haga station in central Gothenburg one early November morning. And it leaves us feeling more inspired to get creative.

Elin, could you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Elin Palmaer Karlsson, and I’m a Masters Student at HDK-Valand and a small business owner. Born in Värnamo, but raised in Gothenburg. I have studied graphics at Dômen Konstskola, a BA in design and just started a MFA in Embedded design at HDK-Valand. I started my company in 2017 but began to work with it for real last year (2020) when I opened my own webshop!
Tell us a bit about your art - where do you get your inspiration?
Like most artists, I see inspiration everywhere. It can be people, photos, colours in nature, feelings or relationships! My art is like a journal; everything that happens in my life is reflected in it.
How would you describe your style? For example, is there a difference between creating more extensive mural art and smaller pieces for printed versions?
I would describe my style as nativistic, playful and colourful! I don’t think there is a difference in creating larger or smaller pieces, but I definitely prefer creating larger ones! There is something very special with doing large murals - it almost feels like you’re embraced by the artwork while creating it.

What would you like to communicate with your art?
My pictures are made to work both as a solitary piece by themselves or to blend in with a collection of posters on a wall. As I use a lot of neutral tones, I think they can easily fit in with many types of interiors.
Any challenges in particular that you have come across in your art path?
I had a hard time figuring out or finding my own style. I’m not even sure I found it yet. But I want to keep on growing and experimenting as an artist, and with that, my art and style will change over time, so maybe I won’t find a particular style that is mine - but that’s okay!
And finally, is there something you’d like to share with those who struggle to find their artistic expression and inspiration, any advice or a word of encouragement?
Hmm... if you’re not in art school - apply. Best decision I ever made; it helped me so much! And remember to create for yourself, not for someone else - if you love what you do, others will eventually do that too.
Thank you Elin!
