Artist talk: Majken Berthelsen
Danish graphic designer and poster maker Majken Berthelsen is the creative force and founder of her own brand Lebenværk (Danish for ‘life work’). Her style is usually naive, abstract and straightforward and often adapted to current trends. The basic structure of her beautiful prints is based on drawing, paint and vector graphics. Let’s get to know Majken and her art a little better...
Hi Majken, please tell us a bit about yourself and your art, so our audience can get to know you better. Where do you get your inspiration?
For more than ten years, I have been creating posters under my brand, LEBENVÆRK. I’m educated in graphic design and get inspired by daily life, colours, shapes and trends in time. I love to explore different techniques to create art. My general style is simple and warm, and that’s where it started!

How did you find your artistic expression, and how do you see your art evolving in the future?
Back in time, I used to draw my art on the computer only, but over time, I have found out that drawing by hand and then working with it digitally gives the art more personality and charm.
What would you like to communicate with your art?
I find peacefulness when creating art – that people like what I do is an extra gain for me. Sometimes I have no goal for the outcome -the art shows up by itself.

Any challenges in particular that you have come across in your art path?
There are many poster artists out there, so you have to stand out to be seen.
Please tell us a bit about your selected artwork that has been put together for Postery. A few of the prints follow the same theme and belong to your collection named “The Dot Collection”. What were the thought and creative processes behind it?
The dot Collection started when I was painting with oil paint and a cotton swab. I discovered the various dots - all different due to how hard I pressed. I loved the look and had to do more in the same way. It had to be simple and warm.
Could you tell us how you would style these prints at home? How would you combine and mix the posters with other decorative items, wall colours or furniture?
The art would be beautiful in a bohemian setup - as the art is simple and warm, It fits most Scandinavian home styles. Styled with brass, oak and earthy colours.
Lastly, is there something you’d like to share with those who struggle to find their artistic expression and inspiration, any advice or a word of encouragement?
Don’t stress to find your inspiration — the inspiration will find you when it’s the right time.
Thank you, Majken!
